CREAD

Training and Demonstration Day on Agroecological Practices in Olive Growing

As part of the NATAE project (North African Transition to AgroEcology), funded by the European Union, the CREAD project team, in collaboration with local actors – ITAF, the Tharwa Iakouren Association, and the DSA of Tizi-Ouzou – has organized a training and demonstration day on agroecological practices in olive growing. This initiative aims to promote the agroecological transition in the Living Lab area of the project.

presentation

The olive tree is the iconic tree of the Mediterranean. Its cultivation dates back thousands of years and is widespread in all countries bordering this sea. Olives and olive oil, derived from this legendary and revered tree, are an integral part of Mediterranean gastronomy and are widely used in many other cuisines worldwide.

As part of the North African. Transition to Agroeology ( NATAE) project, our field surveys and interviews with various agricultural stakeholders in the region have identified olive cultivation as a key value chain to be considered in the Tizi-Ouzou Living Lab (LL-Tizi-Ouzou). This Living Lab is located in the Ath-Ghobri forest massif, covering the communes of Yakourène and Azazga.

In addition to the ongoing experiment conducted at a farm in Yakourène, which examines the effects of certain agroecological practices on olive tree development, we have deemed it beneficial to organize a “field school day” for the farmers of LL-Tizi-Ouzou. This event will focus on different pruning techniques for olive trees, along with a series of presentations related to this tree and its ecosystem.

The event will take place in the city of Yakourène on Wednesday, January 15, 2025.
