On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the National Liberation Revolution, the Centre de recherche en économie appliquée pour le développement (CREAD) organised a scientific seminar to commemorate this memorable day. Two researchers from the Centre, Dr Abdelhakim LOUNACI & Dr Hicham BENAMIROUCHE, organised the seminar. Dr. Abdelhakim LOUNACI presented an overview of the history of higher education and scientific research in Algeria from 1962 to the present day, in a speech entitled ‘Higher education and scientific research in Algeria, from the construction of man to the knowledge economy’. The aim was to review the various stages our sector has gone through and the results it has achieved over the last sixty years, particularly in terms of the number of university graduates, the efforts made in terms of university services and the development of scientific research in terms of the number of publications.
For his part, Dr Hicham Ben Amirouche presented a paper on ‘The current state of the hydrocarbons sector in Algeria and the challenges ahead’, which provided an opportunity to review the most important stages in the country’s energy sector. The speaker began with a historical overview of the origins of the hydrocarbons sector and the first discoveries made in 1956. He then moved on to the important history of the nationalisation of hydrocarbons.
