CREAD, through its Human Development and Social Economy division, organised the first edition of the international conference on mathematics applied to economics (AMiE’24).
On 23 and 24 October 2024, the Research Center for Applied Economics for Development (CREAD), through its HDSD division, organised the first International Conference on Applied Mathematics in Economics (AMiE’24). Hosted by Amazigh language and culture research center in Bejaïa, This meeting brought together researchers from a variety of geographical and disciplinary backgrounds to share their innovative work at the crossroads of economics and applied mathematics.
The central objective of this conference was to present the recent advances in mathematics that are helping to strengthen economic research, in a context where global issues, from the climate crisis to geopolitical transformations, require ever more sophisticated economic analyses. By providing a theoretical framework and appropriate analytical tools, mathematics has become an essential pillar for economists, enabling them to optimise decision-making and solve complex economic problems.
The conference covered a wide range of research topics, from agriculture and energy to the environment, transport, agri-food and employment. The work presented also explored quantitative decision-support methods and actuarial approaches, which are needed to deal with current crises and anticipate future challenges. This wide range of subjects enabled the researchers present to compare their analyses and contribute to an in-depth understanding of economic phenomena, particularly in areas requiring advanced mathematical modelling.
Under the guidance of a steering committee made up of young researchers – Lahna IDRES (Research Fellow B, CREAD), Farid FLICI (Research Director, CREAD), Moundir LASSASSI (Research Director, CNRST), Abdelhakim LOUNACI (Research Fellow A, CREAD), Amine OULMANE (Research Fellow A, CREAD) and Dr. Nassima BOUSBA (Research Fellow A, CRCLA) – the AMiE’24 conference benefited from the supervision of a rigorous scientific committee. This committee, made up of national and international researchers from prestigious institutions in Algeria, Italy, France, Canada, Australia, the United Arab Emirates, Spain, Sweden and Jordan, ensured the scientific quality of the presentations and encouraged enriching multidisciplinary reflection.
Plenary sessions punctuated the two days, offering a platform to renowned researchers. These included Prof. Abdelhakim Hammoudi (INRAE, Agro-ParisTech, University of Paris-Saclay, France), Prof. Said Souam (Economix, University Paris Nanterre), Prof. Samer Kherfi (American University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates), as well as Professors Farid Flici (CREAD), Moundir Lassassi (CNRST) and Djamil Aissani (University of Béjaïa). Each of these contributions offered unique perspectives, broadening the debate on current economic issues and paving the way for future collaborations.
The discussions were as varied as they were stimulating, fostering a sharing of knowledge that was commensurate with current and future economic challenges. The speakers helped to enrich our understanding of the issues to which applied mathematics can provide answers. At the close of the conference, the organisers offered participants a cultural immersion in the city of Béjaïa, enabling them to discover its monuments and archaeological sites. The visit, a tribute to the region’s mathematical heritage, reminded participants that Béjaïa has long been a crossroads of knowledge, dating back to medieval times.
This first edition of AMiE is a promising success for CREAD, which has demonstrated through this event Algeria’s ability to establish itself as a leading player in scientific research applied to contemporary economic issues. The organisers hope that this conference will lay the foundations for a series of international meetings to advance research in a constantly changing world.
